FIRST STEAM-HAULED SOUTHERN ENCOUNTER FOR 2018
As the CFS-imposed fire ban season for the Mt Lofty Ranges has now ended, our steam-hauled services to and from Mt Barker can now begin.
This Sunday’s Southern Encounter will be slightly different than normal, but should be of interest everyone…and it involves STEAM!
Due to unforeseen circumstances, steam locomotive 621 ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ will not be available to work this Sunday’s Southern Encounter. However, as our intensive south-coast based Cockle Train running season has come to an end, we need to return 1913-built steam locomotive Rx207 ‘Dean Harvey’ from its summer home at Goolwa, back to Mt Barker for the winter.
As a result, Sunday’s Southern Encounter will leave Mt Barker behind heritage diesel locomotive 958 for the Mt Barker to Goolwa leg of the journey. At Goolwa, Rx207 will be waiting to double-head the combined 12.15pm Southern Encounter/Cockle Train to Victor Harbor.
Rx207 will then work the 1.30pm Cockle Train departure from Victor Harbor and the 2.45pm Cockle Train from Goolwa solo.
The 3.45pm combined Southern Encounter/Cockle Train will then double-head with Rx207 leading 958 back to Goolwa and onto Mt Barker.
We expect 621 will take over Southern Encounter duties from Sunday 3rd June.
Bookings are essential. Contact our booking office on 1300 655 991 or at Mt Barker station from 9am on Sunday morning.
