The “Duke’s” 85th celebrations

September 19, 2021 at 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

  • « The Southern Encounter
  • Cockle Train (3) »

7/9/1936 – 7/9/2021

In 1936, our States Centenary, a newly designed steam locomotive ran the rails around South Australia. The 620 class! Three of the 620’s were built and ran the same year around the state. Only two 620 class locomotives had the privilege of hauling the South Australian Centenary train, Class leader 620 and 621. Sadly 620 is no longer around but 621 still is!

Sunday the 19th of September SteamRanger will be taking the “Duke” to Goolwa on the Southern Encounter Train and return, but in style. Attached to the train will be our first class carriages where you will sit back in comfort. Our refreshment car Bowmans will be attached for your bottomless morning cup of tea or coffee. Waiting for the passenger on their seat is a “goody bag”( with printed history booklet about “The Duke”, The DVD “50 Miles of Track”, old 621 postcards, 621 DVD and the normal information about the Mount Barker to Victor Harbor line and anything we have old stock of 621).

Stopping at Goolwa the passengers will take a short walk to lunch at the Goolwa Hotel.

A cake to celebrate 621’s milestone year will be carved up for the guests.

After lunch it’s back to Goolwa Railway Station where we will try to get a group photo or two next to 621 then “All Aboard” on a different train! The iconic Cockle Train. Hauled by 621 and traveling along the South Coast in SteamRanger’s Cockle Train carriages to Victor Harbor. At Victor Harbor we only have a 30 minute stop-over because 621 is being turned and readied for the journey home. Then it’s back on board and we head for the Hills with bottomless tea or coffee from Bowmans.

SteamRanger is giving you the opportunity to celebrate with us the 85th anniversary of this great steam locomotive, 621.

Seats are limited to 50 passengers.
