Rail travel in the evening is one of those totally different great rail experiences… Here’s why. Starting in the Adelaide Hills largest town Mount Barker and the headquarters for SteamRanger, we journey along the track watching the houses of the town pass us by and travel past the strawberry fields to climb to the top of the ranges to Philcox Hill. We arrive at the Scottish town of Strathalbyn with a brief stop and then it’s across the undulating country that slopes gently down towards our next stop, Goolwa. From the plains to along the coast. This is one of the most scenic seaside views from a railway carriage window. Arriving at the seaside town of Victor Harbor, you could partake in a meal in one of the many eateries or just fish & chips on the foreshore and watch the sunset over the town. Back on board for a 9pm departure to travel along the coast and watch the stars reflect off the water as we head for home. Before we arrive at Strathalbyn the Moon is due to appear which should light up the countryside. Hitting the steeper grades of the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges at night can only be experienced. With the sound of our locomotive echoing off the scrub and trees this amazing sound is only available to you from the other side of your window. Once over the highest point of our journey, twinkling lights of Mount Barker can be seen in the distance heralding the end of our journey at the Mount Barker Station.
